Saving Bookmarks Online?

from the _why-bother?_ dept
Tue, Mar 28th 2000 11:37am - Mike Masnick
I have said this before, but why are all these companies that involve saving bookmarks online popping up? Bookmarks (and/or favorites if you’re an IE kind of person) seem to work just fine. I don’t hear too many people complaining about them. Yet, these sites have been showing up everywhere, and some have way too much hype. Salon takes a look at these sites and concludes you’re probably better off without them.

I use IE, I suggest…..keeping them off site, such as on a server \[for us w/ servers\]. Or…as a quick fix….email them to your self each week …ie Hotmail account and store them there for some time. Mrwhite@collectivethoughts.org

Well, I had so many bookmarks(over 200) that I was finding it increasingly annoying to step through three-deep trees to get to the ones I’d bothered to sort. One day I got the bright idea to add the bookmarks to the links page on my website, and I now use that as my “web portal” when I’m browsing. If I see a URL I want to remember, I just add it to a local text file until I have the time to evaluate it and decide whether to add it to the page or not.

Why should saving bookmarks be such a big deal? Many of them show up as ‘file not found’ after a bit anyway, so why isn’t there more focus on saving-the-entire-site as a cached-thing? Google does it, why can’t we? 🙂

if you browse through multiple computers, it’s useful
